Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

If there is room, we can pro-rate your tuition fee based on the number of classes remaining in the session. Please note that the Upper Ballet Program classes (September 2020-June 2021) are not noted below. This class will cover watercolor basics and some experimental techniques. There will be some pen and ink techniques in some projects. A materials kit will be provided to each participant. Instructor: Sarah Alexander. 6 classes. This class is offered both onsite and online. Space is limited for on-site programs in order to be compliant with the Massachusetts guidelines for gatherings. For those who wish to take a break from the computer screen and interact with students in a setting that allows for social distancing, they are welcome to take the class at the HCA while the teacher Zooms in to provide instruction.

The Cartoon Club will give students s a well-rounded base and get them started on mastering the styles they desire to doodle in. Learn about color, papers, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as many great painting techniques that will get you working and playing with watercolors! Instructor Sarah Alexander will provide 90 minutes of online instruction via Zoom. Instructor Sarah Alexander will also offer a mid week brief one on one or "check in" session to each student if the want advice on art in progress  between classes.

This class is for the serious beginner or novice painter. In a friendly and multicultural environment, this class is very animated and will seek to inspire your creative journey .

Every week in this 6 class session, Instructor Marion Buricatu will give you a weekly art challenge covering  various painting skills that will take student no more than 30 minutes to do at home. Students are invited to show and tell or ask for feedback/critique on their ongoing pieces or simply participate in this nurturing, stimulating environment. Sketching & Drawing - Session 2

Stressed out? Time to sketch! The goal of this class is promote confidence in a student's ability to improve their drawing by attuning their observation, trying new things, and practice. In this class, we will execute a variety of techniques to warm up and improve observation skills. These exercises are great for all levels. When ready, students will work towards finished drawings and developing their own practice routines to keep their drawing progressing when not in class. Classes may either start with a friendly and encouraging group critique of drawings or a demonstration of that day’s technique. Instructor: Meredith Fitzgerald. 6 classes. Observational Drawing - Session 2

Previously titled "Landscape/Nature Drawing", this class will explore beyond landscapes to include a variety of techniques drawing from observation those objects that are all around them in the HCA building (as opposed to drawing from photographs). Each class will cover various techniques that will build to a final project.  Students will be encouraged to do independent sketching in between classes.

Yoga nidra (also known as yogic sleep) is a powerful technique for controlling your body’s relaxation response. Yoga nidra can be as restorative as sleep, while you remain fully conscious. Giving your mind and body an extra window of deep relaxation offers powerful benefits!

In this class, you’ll build a deeper connection between mind and body. Cultivate conscious relaxation, ease ongoing stress and anxiety, and feel your body melt away into a soothing state of being. From beginner to advanced yogis, anyone can reap the benefits of yoga nidra in this class! 

Recommended: yoga mat, water, blocks, blanket, socks, bolster, etc.

Fee: Dawn is offering these workshops for free and requests that students make a donation when you register for the class or in-person to help support the HCA. Please avoid scams and do not purchase tickets from anybody on social media claiming to have extra or unable to use theirs.

Hopkinton Center for the Arts—Art Around the World series presents a free children's cultural program. You and your child are welcome to join us  as we celebrate a different culture each month with instructor Judith Smith. Kids will listen to a story, hear a themed-song and have fun making a culturally themed art craft. Program runs Saturday 2:00 to 3:00 pm via a Zoom link. Participants will be sent a list in advance of simple materials to provide your child for the craft. A computer screen and internet connection is required.

Learn about the pre-shoot planning process, how best to approach different animals for your photos, and techniques for capturing that perfect expression. Script Analysis Workshop for Actors (All levels)

Ages 12 to Adult

Good acting is specific acting.  A script is the map to character, and by knowing the art and craft of script analysis, actors are given the necessary tools for creating work that enables them more in-depth, attentive and nuanced choices for performance.   

In this two-hour online workshop, students will work on a short play and get a glimpse into some of the key aspects for analyzing text. Learn the tools to decode any play and hone your skills as an actor. Come with a pencil and the willingness to dive into the work together!

Instructor: Megan Schy Gleeson

Megan Schy Gleeson is a theater educator and director.  She has taught and/or directed for Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, Clark University, Boston Children’s Theatre, Vermont Arts Exchange, Theatre Apollinaire, the Boston Theatre Marathon, Central Square/Nora Theater’s That’s What She Said series, Concord Academy, Tide Taken Studios, Alley Cat Theater and Lesley University’s MFA Playwriting Program. Megan was a contributor for Sleeping Weazel’s new work The Audacity: Women Speak

Prior to pursuing a career in directing she was a professional actor.  She acted in theaters such as the Public Theatre/NYSF, Atlantic Theatre Company’s Stage 2 (produced by Politiscopes and Columbia University), Great Lakes Theatre Festival, New Repertory Theatre, Stoneham Theatre (Greater Boston Stage Company), New Harmony Project and the Playwright’s Collective.  MFA, New York University, Tisch School of the Arts.

Sketching and drawing can be a wonderful way to de-stress! Join HCA's instructor Marion Buricatu as she guides you through a colored pencil sketch that you can create as a keepsake to hang on your wall or on card stock to make your own greeting cards!

This March workshop will involve a Zen garden similar to the one pictured:

Although this workshop is intended for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10 are welcome to join. There is no cost to participate, but if you can, we ask that you consider making a donation when you register for the class. Your donation helps support the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and its programs.

You only need to register once per household. Materials recommended: paper or drawing pad, sharpie (fine point and/or extra fine point), pencil, eraser, colored pencils and a ruler, but you can also use markers, oil pastels, paint.....

Get ready for Spring hiking or just making a fun piece of art! Join artist and instructor Bayda Asbridge as she guides you through decorating a walking stick. Students will have a choice of zentangle patterns to choose from prior to the workshop to personalize your piece. This is a great family activity!

This is a 2-hour interactive workshop presented online via Zoom. For ages 10-adult. Students will need to purchase supplies in advance.

Sketching and drawing can be a wonderful way to de-stress! Join HCA's instructor Marion Buricatu as she guides you through a colored pencil sketch that you can create as a keepsake to hang on your wall or on card stock to make your own greeting cards!

This April workshop will involve a rose sketch similar to the one pictured:

Although this workshop is intended for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10 y/o are welcome to join. There is no cost to participate, but if you can, we ask that you consider making a donation when you register for the class. Your donation helps support the HCA programs.

There has been an explosion of hand lettering and calligraphy in design and decoration. Everywhere you look hand lettering appears on rustic board signs, coffee cups, napkins, notebooks and tote bags. Why buy a premade sign when you can make your own personal statement? With techniques and practice through a series of projects, you can learn how to hand letter for fun. Although this class focuses on modern brush pen style calligraphy, if we have time students can try other methods as their interest leads them such as using a felt chisel point, dip pens and cartridge pens. Strengthen your skills and understanding of the craft of acting in this 10-week practical studio class designed for adult students. Explore self-selected and prepared scripted scenes and monologues to deepen your understanding of character, refine your performance, learn reliable skills and techniques, and gain new insight into acting and auditioning. Students will learn through performance and/or observation in this weekly master class.

Students must independently memorize and prepare in advance scripted 2–3 minute monologues or 6–8 minute scenes (serious or comic) from a published stage play of their choice. Participants should read the entire play from which their material is chosen. When working on monologues, students must select an uninterrupted speech (not dialogue cobbled together). Please refrain from selecting movie or television scripts.

There has been an explosion of hand lettering and calligraphy in design and decoration. Everywhere you look hand lettering appears on rustic board signs, coffee cups, napkins, notebooks and tote bags. Why buy a premade sign when you can make your own personal statement? With techniques and practice through a series of projects, you can learn how to hand letter for fun. Although this class focuses on modern brush pen style calligraphy, if we have time students can try other methods as their interest leads them such as using a felt chisel point, dip pens and cartridge pens. It’s time to release some stress and indulge in a creative mini-retreat!  Join instructor Richard Denzer for this 6-hour outdoor class (from 10AM to 4PM) to be held outdoors (location in or around Hopkinton, MA).

The workshop will begin with an informative demonstration followed by coached student painting with individual instruction. Throughout the day, there will be numerous topics discussed such as composition, values, various wash options, contrast, textural techniques and choice of art materials.

All levels, from beginner to advanced, are welcome! Students will need to bring their own supplies (a list can be supplied in advance upon request), a chair and easel or table, and snacks/beverages/lunch. The rain date for this Saturday workshop will be the next day (Sunday). For teens and adults.

It’s time to release some stress and indulge in a creative mini-retreat!  Join instructor Richard Denzer for this 6-hour outdoor class (from 10AM to 4PM) to be held outdoors (location in or around Hopkinton, MA).

Sketching and drawing can be a wonderful way to de-stress! Join HCA's instructor Marion Buricatu as she guides you through a colored pencil sketch that you can create as a keepsake to hang on your wall or on card stock to make your own greeting cards!

This May workshop will involve a geometric landscape sketch similar to the one pictured:

Although this workshop is intended for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10 y/o are welcome to join. There is no cost to participate, but we ask that if you can, please consider making a donation when you register for the class. Your donation helps support the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and its programs.

You only need to register once per household. A laptop/screen and internet connection is required.

Materials recommended: paper or drawing pad, sharpie (fine point and/or extra fine point), pencil, eraser, colored pencils and a ruler, but you can also use markers, oil pastels, paint.....

At the dawn of humanity, one tribe of cave-people survives the many trials of prehistoric life under the wise leadership of Jemilla, The Peacemaker. Jemilla taught her people to express themselves, rather than bashing each others' heads with rocks and eating each others' babies. But one member of the tribe doesn't seem to fit in: Zazzalil. She's always trying to invent things to make life easier… for herself. While out hatching her latest scheme, Zazzalil stumbles upon the most important discovery in history. One that will pit her tribe against wooly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, and change the world forever. She'll travel from omega to alpha, and become… the Firebringer!

Please note that not everyone whom auditions is guaranteed to be offered a role. A production fee will be accessed once a role has been offered and accepted. Interested students should register so that we may more effectively communicate the audition process.

Students should bring a snack and water bottle and dress in comfortable clothes that they don't mind getting dirty!
