Have you ever wondered how they did that? This class is ideal for any creative who is looking to explore the world of art making and learn new mediums and processes. Instructor Marion Buricatu will provide a historical background on individual artists, as well as their chosen medium and process. Participants will then make work inspired by those artists. While class materials will be provided, we ask that each student bring a sketch book to class. Students will be given a prompt each week to encourage them to draw and share their work at the start of each class.

    About Marion Buricatu:

Marion was born in France in an artistic family. Academically, she oriented herself towards science. She received a master’s in Geophysics in Paris and worked in the environmental field. In 2001, she moved to the US with her family and decided to try her hand at painting. She took classes with painting teachers before becoming one herself, earned a modern art certificate at the MOMA, became a docent at the Worcester Art Museum and continuously keeps on learning. In 2011, she became a painting teacher where she combines her love for teaching art and art history.

Do you have some amazing characters but haven't been able to fully realize them in a story and setting? Have a great idea for a comic but can't seem to get all the parts involved to come together?

By using an open-ended script and pre-set panels as a starting point, students will pencil, ink and color a short 3-4 page comic with characters they develop. We will also cover adding in text, shortcuts to use, and try out various comic and manga styles of drawing. If students finish the work on the day's assignments, they are welcome to work on comic projects of their own.

This class is for crafters and non-crafters alike who all have one BIG thing in common - they love making stuff! It doesn’t matter if your interest varies from card-making, to jewelry, knitting, crochet, altered art, and anything else that takes our fancy. These regular Saturday "Crafternoons" are organized and led by HCA instructor Meredith Fitzgerald. She will provide demos for new projects, as well as assist in technique and problem solving for current projects. This is a lovely way to spend an afternoon - meeting new friends, crafting, chatting and maybe you just might finish that project you’ve been working on for years!

First class demo Meredith will show you how to personalize a glass or fabric item using either embroidery, fabric pens, collage or paint pens. Besides traditional Fine Arts, Meredith has experimented with printmaking, knitting, sewing, embroidery, wreath making, calligraphy, origami, woodworking, welding etc. She loves problem solving and encouraging others to "get to done" on projects that have been languishing.

    The Actor's Toolkit

    Grades: 11th- adult

    Days: Monday

Class Time: 07:00 PM- 08:30 PM

Program Type: Adult Programs, Teen Programs

    + More Info

Welcome to the Actor's Toolkit! A New Six-Part series developed by Karin Trachtenberg to help new and experienced actors alike sharpen their skills. We know a dancer does daily barre work, a musician practices scales, but how does the actor get and stay in shape?

    1. An Actor's Tune Up:  In An Actor's Tune Up, students will explore a rigorous evening of warm-up and theater exercises that work out the body, voice and imagination will awaken your senses in preparation for stage, text and character work.
    2. Stage Presence: Being in the moment frees the actor up to respond and react, to be in tune with their fellow performers and to feel at ease in front of an audience. This class will introduce Patsy Rodenburg’s “Second Circle” work for being fully present on stage and in life.
    3. Cold-Read Auditioning: In this class we will cover techniques for cold-reading and feeling comfortable in the audition room. Everyone will be given sides to read and practice.
    4. Playing With Shakespeare: In this class, students explore iambic pentameter and ways to bring Shakespeare’s verse out of the head and into the body. Whether you are brand new to the Bard or have experience with Shakespearean text, we will have fun bringing his words to life.
    5. Monologues: Monologues are an important tool in the actor’s toolkit. For this class, bring in a brand-new monologue to work on or one you’d like to revive for practice and feedback. All students will get the chance to work one on one with Karin as well as observe the work done with other students and other genres. Please contact the HCA and Karin if you would like monologue suggestions before the class begins. *insert actual way to contact here and change contact description as needed*
    6. Creating a Character: You’ve got the part; now how do you build the character? In our final session we will explore ways to create a fully embodied character with your body and voice, as well as how to examine the text for clues that bring the role to life. Participants need to come to the class familiar with a particular role from a play to work with. This can be a role you are currently cast in, one you played in the past, or a dream role you’d like to play. Pre-assigned work will be given for this class which includes reading the full script.

The Hulk has to do taxes, a crime-fighting sidekick joins a support group, and Batman goes stir-crazy without enough criminals to take down. "Superheroes" is a funny, fast-paced series of vignettes that explores how the caped crusaders deal with life in street clothes.

This class is a performance based class that meets once a week. Anyone who registers will be cast in the show. Max 20 students. Auditions for placement in the show will occur on the first day of class.

We are excited to have Actor Zachary Tallman (Broadway National Tour of Cats) join us all the way from NYC this season.

Zachary will be offering a masterclass in musical theater to budding performers and veterans of the artform alike. Students should prepare one song they'd like to hone the performance of and be prepared to work one-on-one with our instructor to find more nuance, choice, freedom, and authenticity in their performance. Students must register in order to reserve a spot to sing with our guest. This masterclass is open to the public for observation as well. Please bring two copies of your sheet music for the instructor and accompanist. After the masterclass, be sure to join us for a joint performance with Zachary, guest Jillian Jameson (Broadway National Tour of Sound of Music) as they collaborate with some local Metro West artists in an evening of song.
