Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

Refund policy: If you notify the HCA via email to info@hopartscenter.org two weeks prior to the start of a class, you will be offered a full refund or credit to use towards a future class. Cancellations that occur with less than two weeks notice are not refundable.

Any student who takes in private lessons on site at the HCA with an instructor will be accessed a $35 registration fee that covers the period of September 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022. This fee covers administrative costs associated with photo copying music, and rental space for recitals.

Payment for lessons themselves should be made directly to the instructor.

Unless specifically noted, classes will take place at the HCA South Street dance studio location at 22 South Street, 2nd floor, Suite 205.  

Students will work on skills in a structured class format to include barre work, center, and elements across the floor. Emphasis is placed on form, musicality, coordination, expression, and working together as a corps. A portion of class remains dedicated to creative dance improvisation where individual expression is encouraged in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Ballet 4 students are encouraged to supplement their training with Broadway Jazz. Set to age appropriate popular music of today, our jazz classes are inspired by classic broadway styles. Classes include a warm up, isolations, laterals, stretches, across the floor progressions, and choreographed combinations. The movements and music of each class will leave students feeling happy and energized. Theater and all dance students will find jazz technique provides wonderful advancement.

Many performing opportunities are available for students at this level including the Spring Concert and The Nutcracker.

This class will take place in-person, but can be available to a student who wishes to access the class from home via Zoom.

This is a 16-class session.

Students seeking a payment installment plan may email the HCA: info@hopartscenter.org. Designed for beginner and intermediate teen (high school) actors, this practical studio class will explore the craft of acting in an ensemble atmosphere. We will use theater games, acting exercises, and scene work (scripted and unscripted) to develop essential skills, techniques, and vocabulary. Students will gain insight and experience in developing a character and delivering a compelling performance in a range of styles. Participants will work toward a showcase for the final class; however, the emphasis will be on learning and the development of skills. This class is for the serious student. Students will audition during the first class for placement purposes. There will be work required outside of class.

Instructor: Jere Shea is a Tony-nominated actor and performer who was most recently seen in the Ben Affleck and Matt Damon-produced Showtime television series "City on a Hill”. For a list of Jere's credits, visit imdb.me/jereshea.

Welcome to ballet! Ballet 1 with introduction to Jazz aims to be an inspiring and imaginative class designed to be a foundation for basic dance principles and the proper French ballet terminology. An emphasis is placed on musicality and creativity while basic coordination skills and the fundamentals of classical ballet are explored through the use of props and imagery. Individual expression and improvisation is encouraged in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Students round out the hour with an introduction to Jazz dance.

Suggested age range: Kindergarten and 1st grade for the fall of 2021. A two year course of study. Students in Ballet 1 (kindergarten and up) may opt to participate in the Spring Concert.

Through story telling, props, music, and play, young dancers are introduced to age appropriate dance movement and our experienced HCA faculty work to ensure this joy and appreciation of dance will remain with the students for a lifetime. Musical Theater Studio (Teens)

This is a 16-class session.

Designed for beginner and intermediate teen (high school) Musical Theater performers, this practical studio class will explore Musical Theater performance in an ensemble atmosphere. While we will use theater games, acting exercises, and scene work (scripted and unscripted) to develop essential skills, the emphasis will be on performing material from stage musicals.

Students should be comfortable singing and performing in public, and will gain insight and experience in developing a character and delivering a compelling performance in a range of styles. Designed for beginner and intermediate teen (high school) Musical Theater performers, this practical studio class will explore Musical Theater performance in an ensemble atmosphere. While we will use theater games, acting exercises, and scene work (scripted and unscripted) to develop essential skills, the emphasis will be on performing material from stage musicals. Students should be comfortable singing and performing in public, and will gain insight and experience in developing a character and delivering a compelling performance in a range of styles. We will explore solo performances and duets. The class will work toward a showcase for the final class; however, the emphasis for this class is the learning and rehearsal process itself. This class is for the serious student. There will be work required outside of class. Students will audition during the first class for placement purposes. Please prepare a fully memorized song from a Musical Theater production, and bring your sheet music to the first class.

Watercolors, Pastels, Oil, Acrylics - Oh My! There's a wide variety of paint in the world of visual arts. This class is a for true beginners or those artists who have only ever worked in one medium. The projects covered change with every session, so returning students will get new projects with options to match their current skill level, while new students will be given beginner fundamental instruction.

The 8 class session will spend two classes each on a different type of paint. You will get a chance to learn the basics of each and find the medium that most inspires you. From there you will be ready to take a dedicated class to the medium of your choice.

This is one of the HCA's most popular programs because it covers a little bit of everything relating to art making. Drawing, Watercolors, acrylic, pastel, mixed media, and pen and ink. Students will also learn about different artists and make work inspired by those artistis. While class materials will be provided, we ask that each student bring a sketch book to class. Students will be given prompts each week to encourage them to draw and share their work at the start of each class.

The very foundation of visual arts starts with a pencil on paper. Instructor Lee Ball will focus on making drawing fun, rewarding and a freeing experience, while covering fundamental skills such as contour drawings, line weight, value, and texture. All levels are welcome, and materials will be provided. Please note that this class qualifies for the HCA Visual Art Studio Certificate Program (4th-8th grade). The certificate program requires a student complete 16 classes of Drawing Fundamentals, 16 classes of Painting Fundamentals, 8 classes of a sculpture-based or mixed media materials course and 8 classes of an elective visual arts course. Welcome to ballet! Ballet 1 with intro to Jazz aims to be an inspiring and imaginative class designed to be a foundation for basic dance principles and the proper French ballet terminology. An emphasis s placed on musicality and creativity while basic coordination skills and the fundamentals of classical ballet are explored through the use of props and imagery. Individual expression and improvisation is encouraged in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Students round out the hour with an Intro to Jazz dance.

Suggested age range: Kindergarten and 1st grade for the fall of 2021. A two year course of study. Students in Ballet 1 (kindergarten and up) may opt to participate in the Spring Concert.
