Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

From beginners to more accomplished oil painters. Limited and intimate setting: 6 students maximum.The instructor, Marion Buricatu, gives individual coaching to each student in the class. Classes are lively and very hands-on; you will get as little or much time as you need. In this multicultural environment, everyone brings a different perspective and different levels of experience, with Marion making it all work together. Actor's Studio - Youth

Students will study the techniques of theatre while building foundational acting skills and theatre vocabulary. In a fun and supportive environment, students will take part in theatre games, monologues, scene work, character building, and improvisation. The final day of class will feature a showcase.

Adult Broadway Jazz and Hip Hop

Set to popular music of today, students will do a warm up inspired by classic broadway styles. Isolations, laterals, stretches, and across the floor progressions are all introduced. Center work, across the floor progressions, and choreographed combinations will also introduce movements based on hip hop style. The movements and music of each class will leave students feeling happy and energized.

Cartooning Club - Spring

The Cartoon Club will give students s a well-rounded base and get them started on mastering the styles they desire to doodle in. Students will survey the works of several great artists and study their forms and lines. We will learn the tools of the trade, and how to study the fundamentals of simple perspective and anatomy. This is an online class. If two or more students wish to gather socially to take the class while the teacher Zooms in, the HCA will provide a classroom and coordinate the Zoom session on site.

Learn about color, papers, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as many great painting techniques that will get you working and playing with watercolors! Instructor Sarah Alexander will provide 90 minutes of online instruction via Zoom. Instructor Sarah Alexander will also offer a mid week brief one on one or "check in" session to each student if the want advice on art in progress  between classes.

Theater Art: Raise Your Voices (7th-12th grade)

The HCA is pleased to bring students (grades 7th-12th) together for this exciting 8-week Spring program!

This special workshop will help you explore the power of theatre to serve as a medium for social justice and explore diversity in our communities. Through the course of eight (8) Wednesday afternoons for 2 hours, students who are interested in playwriting, acting, and directing are given an opportunity to create their own performance piece. The instructor will guide students through research, discussion, writing exercises, ensemble building, actor training and eventually, the creation of a recorded performance piece.

The objective of this class is to allow beginner and intermediate teen (high school) actors a chance to explore the art of acting in a judgment-free, team-oriented way. You will learn terminology, how to break down a scene, and learn the tools to help you build a character from within. We will explore different methods of acting through scene work and character development. The class will work toward a showcase for the final class however the emphasis for this class is the work. This class is for the serious student. Students will "audition" during the first class for placement purposes. There will be work required outside of class. 8 classes. Study acting with Tony Award-nominated stage and screen actor Jere Shea (Stephen Sondheim’s PASSION; Showtime’s “City On A Hill”). Strengthen your skills and understanding of the craft of acting in this 10-week practical studio class designed for adult students. Explore self-selected and prepared scripted scenes and monologues to deepen your understanding of character, refine your performance, learn reliable skills and techniques, and gain new insight into acting and auditioning. Students will learn through performance and/or observation in this weekly master class./

 

Students must independently memorize and prepare in advance scripted 2–3 minute monologues or 6–8 minute scenes (serious or comic) from a published stage play of their choice. Participants should read the entire play from which their material is chosen. When working on monologues, students must select an uninterrupted speech (not dialogue cobbled together). Please refrain from selecting movie or television scripts.
 

Note to All Participants: For the safety of all participants, all exercises and scene work will be modified to follow all health and safety guidelines including face-mask and social distancing requirements set forth by state and local health officials.

Sketching and drawing can be a wonderful way to de-stress! Join HCA's instructor Marion Buricatu as she guides you through a colored pencil sketch that you can create as a keepsake to hang on your wall or on card stock to make your own greeting cards!

This May workshop will involve a geometric landscape sketch similar to the one pictured:

Although this workshop is intended for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10 y/o are welcome to join. There is no cost to participate, but we ask that if you can, please consider making a donation when you register for the class. Your donation helps support the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and its programs.

At the dawn of humanity, one tribe of cave-people survives the many trials of prehistoric life under the wise leadership of Jemilla, The Peacemaker. Jemilla taught her people to express themselves, rather than bashing each others' heads with rocks and eating each others' babies. But one member of the tribe doesn't seem to fit in: Zazzalil. She's always trying to invent things to make life easier… for herself. While out hatching her latest scheme, Zazzalil stumbles upon the most important discovery in history. One that will pit her tribe against wooly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, and change the world forever. She'll travel from omega to alpha, and become… the Firebringer!

Please note that not everyone whom auditions is guaranteed to be offered a role. A production fee will be accessed once a role has been offered and accepted. Interested students should register so that we may more effectively communicate the audition process.

Stage Combat with Matt Greene

 

Students will explore the basics of stage combat in a safe and fun environment. The focus of the workshop will be on single sword fights, "selling" the fight, and the practical considerations when performing combat in a production. No experience necessary.  Please come ready to move in athletic clothes and sneakers (no baggy clothing, watches and jewelry).

His work has been seen at such theaters as the Charles Playhouse, Astor Place Theatre, Hartford Stage, Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Stonehill Theatre Company, Boston Theatre Marathon and Carnegie Hall to name a few.  His plays/screenplays include The East (National Presenting Production, KCACTF 2017), CHOKE, For the Love of Dog, 160 North, The Heist, god in a 747, Black Diamond, The Architect and Son of Valor.His play 160 North has been translated into Hindi and adapted for the screen (under the title Kasganj) with Citoc Motion Pictures in Mumbai.

Enter Stage Left will present a summer youth musical production of Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Junior! All students registered (up to 30 kids max) will be guaranteed to be cast in the production. The plan is rehearse and perform the show outdoors on the HCA property.

Brush up your monologue or musical theater song, and learn valuable, real world audition techniques from Tony-nominated stage and screen actor Jere Shea. Develop an understanding of what casting directors are looking for, and how to stand out as someone the pros will want to work with. This is a great time to prepare for fall theater auditions and the college theater admissions process. Dedicated classes for actors and musical theater performers. In-person at the HCA.

 

Students in the acting section should bring a fully-memorized classical and/or contemporary monologue. Each speech should be 2-3 minutes in duration, from a full-length published stage play. For our purposes, please refrain from bringing material from film/tv.

An Actor Prepares with Karin Trachtenberg

 

An Actor Prepares - musicians and singers practice scales, dancers warm-up at the barre, but how does the actor tune-up their "instrument"? Staying centered, relaxed and connected to the imagination is enhanced with a daily actors workout routine. This workshop will introduce exercises and techniques for preparing the voice, body and mind for rehearsal and performance.  We will explore listening and responding as part of an ensemble, as well as approaching character development through physical expression. Please come in comfortable clothes for moving.

 

Karin Trachtenberg has over 30 years of experience in the theater as an actor, director, teacher, producer and arts administrator. She holds a masters degree in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University and attended drama school in London. Karin has taught theater and arts education at Clark University, Lesley University’s Creative Arts in Education Program, Pine Manor College and The Schauspiel Gemainschaft in Zurich Switzerland. She has performed at various theater venues throughout the Boston area including Zeitgeist Stage, Roxbury Rep, The Providence Fringe Festival, Newton Nomadic, Newton Theater Company, 4th Wall Stage, Stageloft Rep, Fort Point Theater Channel, Marblehead Little Theatre and Open Theatre Project.
