Hopkinton Center for the Arts Educational Classes

HCA is a regional arts center located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, that offers year-round classes and workshops for adults and children. Classes are taught by experienced artist-instructors and are tailored for beginning through advanced students in the visual and performing arts. Classes include programs in the fine arts, acting and theater, music, singing, movie-making, creative writing, and ceramics. If you are in need of financial aid, please fill out our online scholarship form. Young adults are welcome to enroll in most adult courses.

Mixed Media and Printmaking

This course will introduce exciting methods of combining monotypes with collage. Learn basic off-press printmaking techniques using non-toxic water base inks and plexiglass plates to produce one-of-a-kind prints. Students will learn how to apply found materials and plants to create interesting textures and compositions. Original prints will then be combined with other paper sources such as colored tissue, magazine, and newspaper to create finished collages. Tuesdays - 8 classes

Drawing from the human figure is an enjoyable and powerful exploration into the cultural context of one’s own world. At the HCA, you will have the unique experience of blending visual arts with theater arts as we will incorporate models in theatrical costumes for timed posed sketches. This course uses simple materials—charcoal and erasers, inks and brushes—as means of discovery. This drawing class is the perfect start if you’re new to figure drawing, or if it’s been a few years and you’re looking for a fresh start. Basic principles of drawing will be covered in depth. Watercolor Painting Workshop

Learn watercolor skills from Professional Watercolorist and Illustrator Ed Turner, who has been teaching watercolor painting for over 25 years. He is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and  owner of the Art and Frame Emporium in Westborough.  

Students will learn critical steps in making a successful watercolor by focusing on methods that control the medium.  You will be exposed to techniques like washing, salting, cutting, masking, scrapping, and wet on wet painting. Each class, you will complete a watercolor and have gained many new skills. It's a fun, stress-free way to learn how to use the beautiful medium of watercolor.

Supplies: Cotman 12 tube set with palette and brush, tube of perm white gouache, oval eraser, #2 pencil, 1/2" masking tape, 9x12 arches watercolor block, 1/2" #606 scepter watercolor flat wash brush, scepter 101 #8 round brush.
