Hopkinton Center for the Arts Educational Classes

Starting this April, the Hopkinton Center for the Arts has transitioned many of our classes into a virtual format. This is a great opportunity to keep yourself or your child busy. Art has a way of helping us express ourselves when the world around us is in turmoil--it is more than a painting, a song, or a scultpture it is a way of expressing our feelings and emotions when words are not enough. Our artist-faculty is here to lead you on your way in these small online art classes.  Classes include programs in the fine arts, acting and theater, music, singing, movie-making, creative writing, and ceramics. Young adults are welcome to enroll in most adult courses. We are currently using Zoom to host all classes, to learn more about this easy to use platform, including how to join a meeting/class, visit this link: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362193-Joining-a-Meeting.

If you need financial assistance during this time, please contact us for information on our scholarship program at info@hopartscenter.org or fill out our online scholarship form.

In addition, we have extended our HCA Summer Early Registration Discount of $20 off through May 10.

Online: Re:Curve for Core Strength and Easy Joints (Tues eve)

Grades: adult

Days: Tuesday

Class Time: 07:00 PM- 08:00 PM

+ More Info

This online class is a movement-freeing, joint-opening workout that gently helps you find strength by connecting to your natural curves and spirals. It has grown out of my lifelong passion for and exploration of Classical Ballet, Modern dance, Pilates, and the Alexander Technique. We begin with a quiet floor warm-up that asks us to tune in to where we are holding tension, and connect with a process of letting it go. We build an awareness of our spiral structure, exploring circular movements both into and away from our center as we develop a series of exercises following the theme of the class. One day it may be freeing the hip joints. Another day we may open up the ribs and shoulders. Our goal is to rediscover our innate and efficient “self-use." Class works toward building core strength and free flowing movement in tandem with conscious control of the breath. We may continue with standing balance explorations, always with the intention of staying unstressed and curious. We return to the floor to quietly re-center, letting ourselves absorb and process our discoveries. Join us to play with gravity, and circle back to yourself in this safe, non-competitive, judgment-free class!

Please Note: A laptop, tablet or video-conferencing device and a reliable internet connection are required for this class. You will also need a thick exercise mat and enough space to lie with arms and legs outstretched.  In the event that CDC guidelines eliminate the need for "social distancing", the class will meet at the Masonic Hall studio on Main Street in Hopkinton.

10 classes. Instructor: Cathy Fallon: a former Principal ballet dancer, is Pilates Mat certified, holds a B.S in Kinesthetic Education and Dance, and is an AmSAT certified teacher of the Alexander Technique mind/body awareness technique.

If you'd like to try one class or join mid-session, please contact the HCA via email at info@hopartscenter.org so that we can adjust the tuition fee.

Class Time: 02:00 PM- 04:00 PM

+ More Info

We are going back to the roots of our pottery traditions! Ever wonder how they used to (and still do!) make such beautiful vessels without a potter’s wheel? Join us for our unique online ceramics class where you will learn a variety of hand building techniques (including coil, slab and pinch/pull) in this four-week, project-based, on-line ceramic class. Projects may include decorative and functional coil pots, bowls, or containers, ocarinas, mugs, vases.

When the session is complete, we will let you know when you can drop off the pieces you create in this class for bisque firing. To finish your piece, you will be invited to a glazing class when the Center re-opens.

Included in the class fee is 12.5 pounds of clay. Students will need to provide their own tools. If you need to purchase tools, we have some basic kits available for $10. Finally, students will need to supply a piece of heavy canvas, wooden board or drywall at least 18” x 18” to work on, and a rolling pin (or fat dowel).

Online - FREE: Oil Painting

Grades: 9th- adult

Days: Monday

Class Time: 02:00 PM- 03:00 PM

+ More Info

Mondays at 2pm with Zoom with Marion Buricatu

Registering is free. The HCA asks that you make a donation to help the center in lieu of paying tuition for this 6 class session. LINK: donation

Every dollar raised will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000.

Here is how it works:

  • Each student works on his/her own project.
  • We use a shared folder on Google drive called "HCA Oil Painting Class Sharing Folder," where everybody can upload a picture of their painting. (If you can't do it, you can send your picture directly to the instructor). This process allows us to have a better image quality, even if it will never be as good as real life eyes!
  • Marion will try to send a weekly challenge about basic painting skills that will not take you more than 20 minutes to do at home.
  • Once a week, on Monday at 2pm, we will meet on Zoom and share our projects. Some will just want to show and tell, some will look for feedback/criticism, some will just have nothing to share that week but enjoy participating in this kind and stimulating environment!
  • The meeting is supposed to last about 40 minutes, but you can leave anytime.
  • Marion will supply a materials list for new students.
