Hopkinton Center for the Arts Educational Online & In-Person Classes

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced students. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we beleive the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

 

NEW! Study and Enrichment Program. For students in grades 2 through 8. Designed to work with the Hopkinton School District's Hybrid school learning plan, with students attending the SEP program on the days they are not in school. The on-site program features small class sizes where students can work on school assignments under adult supervision and have access to enrichment programs in the arts. Actor's Studio for Beginners (Mon)

SEPTEMBER 14th update: We've combined Intermediate and Beginner Acting into this one class for this Fall 2020 session.

This acting class is great for the beginner performer (with less than two years acting class experience). Students will study the techniques of theatre while building foundational acting skills and theatre vocabulary. Students will explore theatre through games, monologues, scene work, character building, and improvisation. The final day of class will feature a showcase.

12 classes. Instructor: Maureen Regan. For grades 4th – 8th. Limited to 8 students on-site. The HCA is open to offering students the opportunity to Zoom into the live class from the comfort of their home. Cartooning Club - Session 1

The Cartoon Club will give students s a well-rounded base and get them started on mastering the styles they desire to doodle in. We’ll survey the works of several great artists and study their forms and lines. We’ll learn the tools of the trade, and how to study the fundamentals of simple perspective and anatomy. 6 classes. This class is offered both onsite and online. Space is limited for on-site programs in order to be compliant with the Massachusetts guidelines for gatherings. Experiment with Watercolor - Session 1

Learn about color, papers, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as many great painting techniques that will get you working and playing with watercolors! Instructor Sarah Alexander will provide 1 hour of online instruction via Zoom. The 2nd hour will involve recorded prompts for the students to work on their project in between classes and receive advice and feedback.

Playwriting 101 for teens

Do you love to create your own stories? Do you dream of seeing your work performed on stage or film? This course will give you the tools to organize your story ideas on paper and help you discover and develop your unique voice for playwriting. The HCA will offer the opportunity for students in this class to produce a staging of their completed scene/script with student actors in our Winter session.

Online Ceramics Handbuilding - Wed - Session 1

For experienced ceramics students. This class is an online component to the regularly scheduled Wednesday night wheel-throwing/hand-building class. Advanced students can hone their skills with the assistance of the teacher who will provide technical support and inspiration to students who are not able to come into the studio on a regular basis because of the national pandemic. Please note that this is a hybrid class where the teacher will be working with students in the classroom who are primarily focused on wheel-throwing; however, support and instruction will be given to at home hand-building students on an as-needed basis and the computer will be hooked up with the class in the hopes that all students will remain members of our ceramics community and benefit from each others knowledge and experience. Included in the class fee is 12.5 pounds of clay. Students will need to provide their own tools. If you need to purchase tools, we have some basic kits available for $10. Finally, students will need to supply a piece of heavy canvas, wooden board or drywall at least 18” x 18” to work on, and a rolling pin (or fat dowel).

Just get a new camera? Frustrated with one you have had for a while and wish you could get better images? Join us for a workshop designed to help understand the features of digital cameras and learning how to get off auto! This workshop is immediately followed by the next level which will deal with shutter speeds and enhancements, which requires separate registration. For those who understand the basics of their camera, you may register just for section 2.

Learn how to take your photography to the next level using your camera’s manual settings and be ready for any shooting scenario. Part 1 is a separate workshop for true beginners who've never utilized their digitial cameras beyond "auto". It is recommended that those students sign up for Pt 1 before taking Pt 2.

Let's Go! Art Around the World is a free children's cultural series presented by the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. You and your child are welcome to join us  as we celebrate a different culture each month with instructor Judith Smith. Kids will listen to a story, hear a themed-song and have fun making a culturally themed art craft. Program runs Saturdays from 2—3:00 pm via a Zoom link. Participants will be sent a list in advance of simple materials to provide your child for the craft. A computer screen and internet connection is required. Registered participants will receive a Zoom via email no later than September 25. 

September 26: EnglandFamily Coat of Arms

Please join us for Family fun, relaxation and learning together. We will learn about English Heraldry and make a Family Coat of Arms. Grab your art supplies and dress to mess! If you want to dress in medieval costume, please feel free! Visual aids and directions will be emailed to you. Ms. Judy will show you how to adapt your project for the materials you have.

Recommended for ages 3 to 8. Pre-registration is required per family.

Do you think the guitar may be right for you but you're not ready for 1:1 lessons? Looking for an activity that teens and parents can do together? Then this online class is for you! Music is a great stress reliever and a lot of fun!

Beginner Group Guitar is an ten week online course designed to introduce basic guitar playing to beginners, with no previous music study needed. Emphasis is placed on learning guitar skills through playing classic pop songs. Essential guitar skills and basic note-reading are taught in a fun, supportive setting that allows students to develop at their own pace.

Instructor: Jack Byrne.

Jack Byrne is a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Boston, MA. Jack holds a Bachelor’s in Music from UMass Amherst, and a Master’s in Voice Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College. Jack is well versed in playing a wide variety of styles from Rock, Folk, Bluegrass, Metal, Classical, and Jazz. He has performed as a guitarist on tour with Indie/Pop band, “The Narrative,” and has been performing and recording his own music for about 15 years.

Jack teaches lessons in Voice, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Banjo, Ukulele, and Mandolin. His teaching philosophy is that you are the artist, and he is simply nudging you along to find your own voice. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a more seasoned player, it is Jack’s mission to help each of his students find the confidence to achieve their artistic goals through fun and upbeat lessons. He is the host of HCA's monthly Open Mic Night.

The Cartoon Club will give students s a well-rounded base and get them started on mastering the styles they desire to doodle in. We’ll survey the works of several great artists and study their forms and lines. We’ll learn the tools of the trade, and how to study the fundamentals of simple perspective and anatomy. 6 classes. Dance Adventure (Virtual/On Demand)

No need to rush to a scheduled online or in-person dance class for your young dancer! Now YOU can choose the day/time each week for your little dancer to embark on their dance adventure. 

 

The HCA Dance Adventure series is an imaginative movement program for young children. Dancers will take a virtual trip to the theater, a fairy mountain adventure, a trip to an animal carnival and more. Special guests will be featured each week. During the 5th week, Dance Adventure students will receive fun video tutorials from the teenage dancers in the Upper School. Videos will share how to make a cool headpiece or other dance related craft. Families will then have the option to send in a picture or a video of their dancer doing their favorite moves. The images will be included in an end of session movie to be shared with families via private link. See who else is dancing around their home - just like you are!

 

A link to a prerecorded class will be shared with registered families each Monday. Each class link will remain available for viewing for one week. Classes run approximately 25 minutes. Put on your favorite outfit and dance along with us! The videos are created by Dance Director Jessica Wilson. 6 class video series. For dancers 3.5 - 5 years old.
