Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

If a class has started and you wish to join mid-session, please contact the HCA via email at info@hopartscenter.org. If there is room, we can pro-rate your tuition fee based on the number of classes remaining in the session. Please note that the Upper Ballet Program classes (September 2020-June 2021) are not noted below. Watercolor Painting & Pen/Ink - Session 2

This class will cover watercolor basics and some experimental techniques. There will be some pen and ink techniques in some projects. A materials kit will be provided to each participant. Instructor: Sarah Alexander. 6 classes. This class is offered both onsite and online. Space is limited for on-site programs in order to be compliant with the Massachusetts guidelines for gatherings. For those who wish to take a break from the computer screen and interact with students in a setting that allows for social distancing, they are welcome to take the class at the HCA while the teacher Zooms in to provide instruction.

Learn about color, papers, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as many great painting techniques that will get you working and playing with watercolors! Instructor Sarah Alexander will provide 90 minutes of online instruction via Zoom. Instructor Sarah Alexander will also offer a mid week brief one on one or "check in" session to each student if the want advice on art in progress  between classes.

This class is for the serious beginner or novice painter. In a friendly and multicultural environment, this class is very animated and will seek to inspire your creative journey .

Every week in this 6 class session, Instructor Marion Buricatu will give you a weekly art challenge covering  various painting skills that will take student no more than 30 minutes to do at home. Students are invited to show and tell or ask for feedback/critique on their ongoing pieces or simply participate in this nurturing, stimulating environment. Kids will listen to a story, hear a themed-song and have fun making a culturally themed art craft. Program runs Saturday 2:00 to 3:00 pm via a Zoom link. Participants will be sent a list in advance of simple materials to provide your child for the craft. A computer screen and internet connection is required.

Learn about the pre-shoot planning process, how best to approach different animals for your photos, and techniques for capturing that perfect expression. Script Analysis Workshop for Actors (All levels)

Grades: 7th- adult

Ages 12 to Adult

Good acting is specific acting.  A script is the map to character, and by knowing the art and craft of script analysis, actors are given the necessary tools for creating work that enables them more in-depth, attentive and nuanced choices for performance.   

In this two-hour online workshop, students will work on a short play and get a glimpse into some of the key aspects for analyzing text. Learn the tools to decode any play and hone your skills as an actor. Come with a pencil and the willingness to dive into the work together!

Instructor: Megan Schy Gleeson

Megan Schy Gleeson is a theater educator and director.  She has taught and/or directed for Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, Clark University, Boston Children’s Theatre, Vermont Arts Exchange, Theatre Apollinaire, the Boston Theatre Marathon, Central Square/Nora Theater’s That’s What She Said series, Concord Academy, Tide Taken Studios, Alley Cat Theater and Lesley University’s MFA Playwriting Program. Megan was a contributor for Sleeping Weazel’s new work The Audacity: Women Speak

Prior to pursuing a career in directing she was a professional actor.  She acted in theaters such as the Public Theatre/NYSF, Atlantic Theatre Company’s Stage 2 (produced by Politiscopes and Columbia University), Great Lakes Theatre Festival, New Repertory Theatre, Stoneham Theatre (Greater Boston Stage Company), New Harmony Project and the Playwright’s Collective.  MFA, New York University, Tisch School of the Arts.

Sketching and drawing can be a wonderful way to de-stress! Join HCA's instructor Marion Buricatu as she guides you through a colored pencil sketch that you can create as a keepsake to hang on your wall or on card stock to make your own greeting cards!

This March workshop will involve a Zen garden similar to the one pictured:

Although this workshop is intended for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10 are welcome to join. There is no cost to participate, but if you can, we ask that you consider making a donation when you register for the class. Your donation helps support the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and its programs.

You only need to register once per household. Materials recommended: paper or drawing pad, sharpie (fine point and/or extra fine point), pencil, eraser, colored pencils and a ruler, but you can also use markers, oil pastels, paint.....

Get ready for Spring hiking or just making a fun piece of art! Join artist and instructor Bayda Asbridge as she guides you through decorating a walking stick. Students will have a choice of zentangle patterns to choose from prior to the workshop to personalize your piece. This is a great family activity!

This is a 2-hour interactive workshop presented online via Zoom. For ages 10-adult. Students will need to purchase supplies in advance.
