Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.
On this page you will a chronological list of current classes. Use the filters to aid in your search. If a class has started and you wish to join mid-session, please contact the HCA via email at info@hopartscenter.org.
Refund policy: If you notify the HCA via email to info@hopartscenter.org two weeks prior to the start of a class, you will be offered a full refund or credit to use towards a future class. Beginning and intermediate students will learn basic ceramic techniques. Students initial focus will be on basic wheel-throwing skills such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Later in the session students will be introduced to hand-building techniques and can then choose to work on individual wheel-thrown or hand-built projects. 07Jan18MarCeramics: Teen Intermediate Wheel Throwing Grades 9th-12th (Sat 9:30AM) Grades: 9th-12th Days: Saturday Class Time: 09:30 AM- 12:30 PM + More Info Beginning high school students will learn basic ceramic techniques such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Experienced students will learn more advanced forms as well as hone in on their own individual styles. Form alteration and complex surface decorating techniques will be explored together with the instructor. This class is for high school students with or without prior experience in ceramics. Students younger than 9th grade with at least two years of wheel-throwing experience, and teacher permission, will be allowed to register for this class. This class is different from the Fine Arts Academy, as it will not be project-based or focus on a particular artist. An active and engaging introduction to improvisation. We will use games and exercises to learn the basic rules, elements, and techniques of this theatrical art. Students will harness their inate creativity and use their imaginations to explore unscripted storytelling. Come and explore this class in Direction for the Theatrical Stage. We'll explore the creative, logical, and fun elements that go into choosing pieces, establishing a production concept and vision, and selected the right cast for the work. Students will have the opportunity to direct their peers in scene study and all participants will also serve as actors for their Director peers.

In this four-part workshop, students will take a character all the way from the page on to the stage! Through improv, games, movement, and guided exploration all students will create and develop a character and write a monologue for them. 14Jan11MarThe Art of Drawing Comics (12+) Grades: 7th- adult Days: Saturday Class Time: 11:15 AM- 12:15 PM + More Info Do you want to learn how to draw Professional cartoon characters that will enable you to create amazing comic strips or even a graphic novel? Do you have some amazing characters but haven't been able to fully realize them in a story and setting? Have a great idea for a comic but can't seem to get all the parts involved to come together? By using an open-ended script and pre-set panels as a starting point, students will pencil, ink and color a short 3-4 page comic with characters they develop. We will also cover adding in text, shortcuts to use, and try out various comic and manga styles of drawing. 14Jan11MarTraditional Indian Painting Arts (14-18 y/o) Grades: 9th-12th Days: Saturday Class Time: 12:30 PM- 02:30 PM + More Info ***REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED*** Every region in India can be associated with a particular form of art, ranging from Mithila paintings of North to Tanjore paintings of the South, and Pattachitra in the East to Warli in the west. In this mini class instructor Kanchan Tare will introduce students to the rich culture of India, and the traditional art of Warli painting and dot mandala painting. Kanchan Tare has a Masters of Computer Management and Bachelors in Electronics from Pune University, India. Kanchan has taught fine arts and crafts in India and the US focusing on color theory, painting, drawing, origami and more. In addition, Kanchan leads workshops in clay idol making, Kangra Rajasthani Painting, Warli Painting and Lippan craft. Ages: 14-18 January 14 - March 11 (12:30 pm-02:30 pm)

The teacher will provide students with the opportunity to discover the joy of dancing. We will gain knowledge and understanding of timing, rhythm, and dance vocabulary. ABOUT KARIN TRACHTENBERG A classically trained actress, Karin has tackled such major roles as Hamlet’s Polonius, King Agamemnon in Iphigenia in Aulis, and even performed in Latin as the Devil in Hildegarde Von Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum. Always working on her craft, Karin trained extensively with legendary voice and Shakespeare coach, Patsy Rodenburg receiving teaching accreditation as a Patsy Rodenburg Associate. She recently traveled to Greece to pursue studies in Greek drama at the Hydrama Theatre and Arts Center. This transformative experience culminated in a public performance playing the titular role in Euripides “Phaedra”. For superheroes, saving the world is tough, but the time spent away from work is tougher. The Hulk has to do taxes, a crime-fighting sidekick joins a support group, and Batman goes stir-crazy without enough criminals to take down. "Superheroes" is a funny, fast-paced series of vignettes that explores how the caped crusaders deal with life in street clothes. This class is a performance based class that meets once a week. Anyone who registers will be cast in the show. Max 20 students. Auditions for placement in the show will occur on the first day of class. The performance will take place on Saturday, April 1st. There will be additional dates added to the last week of March to prepare for the April 1st performance. Instructor/Director: Stacey Wein

Join instructor Richard Denzer for this 6-hour class from 11AM to 5PM. The class will begin with an basic discussion of materials and techniques, followed by a simple watercolor painting demonstration. Students may paint along, referring the same image, or may work from their own photo. Individual instruction and coaching will be provided. Throughout the process, numerous topics will be discussed in further detail (such as composition, values, various wash options, contrast, textures and the choice of supplies). While various painting approaches are reviewed, the instructor tends to specialize in tightly rendered, realistic work. All levels, from beginner to advanced, are welcome. 29AprBroadway in Hopkinton: Masterclass in Musical Theater Grades: 7th- adult Days: Saturday Class Time: 02:00 PM- 05:00 PM + More Info We are excited to have Actor Zachary Tallman (Broadway National Tour of Cats) join us all the way from NYC this season. Zachary will be offering a masterclass in musical theater to budding performers and veterans of the artform alike. Students should prepare one song they'd like to hone the performance of and be prepared to work one-on-one with our instructor to find more nuance, choice, freedom, and authenticity in their performance. Students must register in order to reserve a spot to sing with our guest. This masterclass is open to the public for observation as well. Please bring two copies of your sheet music for the instructor and accompanist. After the masterclass, be sure to join us for a joint performance with Zachary, guest Jillian Jameson (Broadway National Tour of Sound of Music) as they collaborate with some local Metro West artists in an evening of song.
