    The Actor's Toolkit

    Grades: 11th- adult

    Days: Monday

Class Time: 07:00 PM- 08:30 PM

    + More Info

Welcome to the Actor's Toolkit! A New Six-Part series developed by Karin Trachtenberg to help new and experienced actors alike sharpen their skills. We know a dancer does daily barre work, a musician practices scales, but how does the actor get and stay in shape?

    1. An Actor's Tune Up:  In An Actor's Tune Up, students will explore a rigorous evening of warm-up and theater exercises that work out the body, voice and imagination will awaken your senses in preparation for stage, text and character work.
    2. Stage Presence: Being in the moment frees the actor up to respond and react, to be in tune with their fellow performers and to feel at ease in front of an audience. This class will introduce Patsy Rodenburg’s “Second Circle” work for being fully present on stage and in life.
    3. Cold-Read Auditioning: In this class we will cover techniques for cold-reading and feeling comfortable in the audition room. Everyone will be given sides to read and practice.
    4. Playing With Shakespeare: In this class, students explore iambic pentameter and ways to bring Shakespeare’s verse out of the head and into the body. Whether you are brand new to the Bard or have experience with Shakespearean text, we will have fun bringing his words to life.
    5. Monologues: Monologues are an important tool in the actor’s toolkit. For this class, bring in a brand-new monologue to work on or one you’d like to revive for practice and feedback. All students will get the chance to work one on one with Karin as well as observe the work done with other students and other genres. Please contact the HCA and Karin if you would like monologue suggestions before the class begins. *insert actual way to contact here and change contact description as needed*
    6. Creating a Character: You’ve got the part; now how do you build the character? In our final session we will explore ways to create a fully embodied character with your body and voice, as well as how to examine the text for clues that bring the role to life. Participants need to come to the class familiar with a particular role from a play to work with. This can be a role you are currently cast in, one you played in the past, or a dream role you’d like to play. Pre-assigned work will be given for this class which includes reading the full script.

We are excited to have Actor Zachary Tallman (Broadway National Tour of Cats) join us all the way from NYC this season.

Zachary will be offering a masterclass in musical theater to budding performers and veterans of the artform alike. Students should prepare one song they'd like to hone the performance of and be prepared to work one-on-one with our instructor to find more nuance, choice, freedom, and authenticity in their performance. Students must register in order to reserve a spot to sing with our guest. This masterclass is open to the public for observation as well. Please bring two copies of your sheet music for the instructor and accompanist. After the masterclass, be sure to join us for a joint performance with Zachary, guest Jillian Jameson (Broadway National Tour of Sound of Music) as they collaborate with some local Metro West artists in an evening of song.
