Hopkinton Center for the Arts Educational Online & In-Person Classes

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced students. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we beleive the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

 

NEW! Study and Enrichment Program. For students in grades 2 through 8. Designed to work with the Hopkinton School District's Hybrid school learning plan, with students attending the SEP program on the days they are not in school. The on-site program features small class sizes where students can work on school assignments under adult supervision and have access to enrichment programs in the arts. The instructor, Marion Buricatu, gives individual coaching to each student in the class. Classes are lively and very hands-on; you will get as little or much time as you need. In this multicultural environment, everyone brings a different perspective and different levels of experience, with Marion making it all work together. It is much more than just a painting class!

Adult Broadway Jazz and Hip Hop

Set to popular music of today, students in this adult Broadway Jazz and Hip Hop class will do a warm up inspired by classic broadway styles. Isolations, laterals, stretches, and across the floor progressions are all introduced. Center work, across the floor progressions, and choreographed combinations will also introduce movements based on hip hop style. The movements and music of each class will leave students feeling happy and energized. 12 classes. Classes will be kept small this fall to ensure social distancing.

Experiment with Watercolor - Session 1

Learn about color, papers, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as many great painting techniques that will get you working and playing with watercolors! Instructor Sarah Alexander will provide 1 hour of online instruction via Zoom. The 2nd hour will involve recorded prompts for the students to work on their project in between classes and receive advice and feedback.

This class is for the serious beginner painter. In a friendly and multicultural environement, this class is very animated and will seek to inspire your creative journey . Every week Instructor Marion Buricatu will give you a weekly art challenge about basic painting skills that will take student no more than 30 minutes to do at home. Students are invited to show and tell or ask for feedback/critique or simply participate in this nurturing, stimulating environment.  A materials list will be provided to students to purchase on their own.  6 classes in the session.

Online Ceramics Handbuilding - Wed - Session 1

For experienced ceramics students. This class is an online component to the regularly scheduled Wednesday night wheel-throwing/hand-building class. Advanced students can hone their skills with the assistance of the teacher who will provide technical support and inspiration to students who are not able to come into the studio on a regular basis because of the national pandemic. Please note that this is a hybrid class where the teacher will be working with students in the classroom who are primarily focused on wheel-throwing; however, support and instruction will be given to at home hand-building students on an as-needed basis and the computer will be hooked up with the class in the hopes that all students will remain members of our ceramics community and benefit from each others knowledge and experience. Included in the class fee is 12.5 pounds of clay. Students will need to provide their own tools. If you need to purchase tools, we have some basic kits available for $10. Finally, students will need to supply a piece of heavy canvas, wooden board or drywall at least 18” x 18” to work on, and a rolling pin (or fat dowel).

6 Classes Total: (5) 2.5 hour classes online, plus one in-person glazing class (Date TBA).

Have fun working out and learning a classical art form. The faculty does a wonderful job helping each student get the best class they can in order to improve strength and flexibility. The objective of this class is to allow beginner and intermediate students a chance to explore the art of acting in a judgment-free, team-oriented way. You will learn terminology, how to break down a scene, and learn the tools to help you build a character from within. We will explore different methods of acting through scene work and character development. The class will work toward a showcase for the final class however the emphasis for this class is the work. This class is for the serious student. Students will "audition" during the first class for placement purposes. There will be work required outside of class.

Stressed out? Time to sketch! The goal of this class is promote confidence in a student's ability to improve their drawing by attuning their observation, trying new things, and practice. In this class, we will execute a variety of techniques to warm up and improve observation skills. These exercises are great for all levels. When ready, students will work towards finished drawings and developing their own practice routines to keep their drawing progressing when not in class. Classes may either start with a friendly and encouraging group critique of drawings or a demonstration of that day’s technique.

Join us for a workshop designed to help understand the features of digital cameras and learning how to get off auto! This workshop is immediately followed by the next level which will deal with shutter speeds and enhancements, which requires separate registration. She previously taught wildlife photography and photo editing classes for 13 years with Mass Audubon's Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary. She is now teaching adults and families about wildlife and photography through programs with her new company The Joys of Nature.

Do you think the guitar may be right for you but you're not ready for 1:1 lessons? Looking for an activity that teens and parents can do together? Then this online class is for you! Music is a great stress reliever and a lot of fun!

Beginner Group Guitar is an ten week online course designed to introduce basic guitar playing to beginners, with no previous music study needed. Emphasis is placed on learning guitar skills through playing classic pop songs. Essential guitar skills and basic note-reading are taught in a fun, supportive setting that allows students to develop at their own pace.

Instructor: Jack Byrne.

Jack Byrne is a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Boston, MA. Jack holds a Bachelor’s in Music from UMass Amherst, and a Master’s in Voice Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College. Jack is well versed in playing a wide variety of styles from Rock, Folk, Bluegrass, Metal, Classical, and Jazz. He has performed as a guitarist on tour with Indie/Pop band, “The Narrative,” and has been performing and recording his own music for about 15 years.

Jack teaches lessons in Voice, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Banjo, Ukulele, and Mandolin. His teaching philosophy is that you are the artist, and he is simply nudging you along to find your own voice. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a more seasoned player, it is Jack’s mission to help each of his students find the confidence to achieve their artistic goals through fun and upbeat lessons. He is the host of HCA's monthly Open Mic Night.

The workshop will begin with an informative demonstration followed by coached student painting with individual instruction. Throughout the day, there will be numerous topics discussed such as composition, values, various wash options, contrast, textural techniques and choice of art materials. This is a great alternative to on-line learning in which you can safely try your hand at capturing the beauty of autumn in New England!

For semi-experienced water colorists with their own materials. Beginners are welcome and will be provided a materials list. One day workshop (with a one hour lunch break). Online Ceramics Handbuilding - Session 2

For experienced ceramics students. This class is an online component to the regularly scheduled Wednesday night wheel-throwing/hand-building class. Advanced students can hone their skills with the assistance of the teacher who will provide technical support and inspiration to students who are not able to come into the studio on a regular basis because of the national pandemic. Please note that this is a hybrid class where the teacher will be working with students in the classroom who are primarily focused on wheel-throwing; however, support and instruction will be given to at home hand-building students on an as-needed basis and the computer will be hooked up with the class in the hopes that all students will remain members of our ceramics community and benefit from each others knowledge and experience. Included in the class fee is 12.5 pounds of clay. Students will need to provide their own tools. If you need to purchase tools, we have some basic kits available for $10. Finally, students will need to supply a piece of heavy canvas, wooden board or drywall at least 18” x 18” to work on, and a rolling pin (or fat dowel).

6 Classes Total: (5) 2.5 hour classes online, plus one in-person glazing class (Date TBA). No classes on Veteran's Day and the evening before Thanksgiving.

There has been an explosion of hand lettering and calligraphy in design and decoration. Everywhere you look hand lettering appears on rustic board signs, coffee cups, napkins, notebooks and tote bags. Why buy a premade sign when you can make your own personal statement? With techniques and practice through a series of projects, you can learn how to hand letter for fun.

Although this class focuses on modern brush pen style calligraphy, if we have time students can try other methods as their interest leads them such as using a felt chisel point, dip pens and cartridge pens. Each class will start with warm up exercises and students will be given worksheets they can practice on if they wish outside of class.
