Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

Refund policy: If you notify the HCA via email to info@hopartscenter.org two weeks prior to the start of a class, you will be offered a full refund or credit to use towards a future class. Cancellations that occur with less than two weeks notice are not refundable.

Any student who takes in private lessons on site at the HCA with an instructor will be accessed a $35 registration fee that covers the period of September 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022. This fee covers administrative costs associated with photo copying music, and rental space for recitals.

Payment for lessons themselves should be made directly to the instructor.

Beginning students will learn basic ceramic techniques. Students initial focus will be on basic wheel-throwing skills such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Later in the session students will be introduced to hand-building techniques and can then choose to work on individual wheel-thrown or hand-built projects. Intermediate students will focus on making more complex forms, glazing techniques and other surface decoration. Class discussions and critiques of completed works will allow students to better explore their individual styles. Students will have access to Open Studio hours to work on their pieces outside of class time.

This class is perfect for beginners who want to learn to use a pottery wheel. Beginners will learn to wedge clay and form clay on the wheel. Continuing students refine their wheelthrowing skills and expand their knowledge of decorating techniques.

Tuition includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing. (Adult classes include open studio time).

Instructor: Classes will be split between Hana Reilly and Cheska Kommisar.

Open Studio for Visual Artists w/Marion Buricatu

Under the guidance of instructor Marion Buricatu, this 3-pack of Saturday workshops are for students wishing to find and enhance their fundamental art skills in drawing and painting. Students may bring a project of their choosing at any stage of the process, and Marion will customize her instruction and offer lessons on elements of art and technique.

Students should bring their own supplies. Spots are limited to 5 people to allow for individual attention.

The class will take place on September 25, October 23rd and November 20, 2021. A minimum of two (2) students is required to run this program. Saturdays 2 pm - 4 pm.

An Actor Prepares w/Karin Trachtenberg

This 4-class session is designed for actors, performers and public speakers, this course will introduce exercises and techniques for preparing the voice, body and mind for rehearsal and performance. We will explore listening and responding as part of an ensemble, how to approach character development through physical expression, and then move into language using Shakespeare’s verse.

Please bring a notebook or journal and come prepared to move with loose comfortable clothing.

For ages 16 thru Adult. Class dates: 10/19, 10/26, 11/2 & 11/9

Instructor Karen Trachtenberg: Trachtenberg has over 30 years of experience in the theater as an actor, director, teacher, producer and arts administrator. She holds a masters degree in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University and attended drama school in London. Trachtenberg has taught theater and arts education at Clark University, Lesley University’s Creative Arts in Education Program, Pine Manor College and The Schauspiel Gemainschaft in Zurich Switzerland. She has performed at various theater venues throughout the Boston area including Zeitgeist Stage, Roxbury Rep, The Providence Fringe Festival, Newton Nomadic, Newton Theater Company, 4th Wall Stage, Stageloft Rep, Fort Point Theater Channel, Marblehead Little Theatre and Open Theatre Project. Stage Combat w/Matt Greene

This compact course examines and applies the fundamental approach to the art of stage combat, stressing principles of safety, form, choreographic conception and execution. The class includes the exploration of a variety of combat disciplines (unarmed combat, knife, single sword) and the application of each in a choreographed fight. Emphasis is on an eventual application in a performance environment. This is a physically demanding course and participants should come ready to move.

In this class, HCA Director of Music Eric Miller will help you learn how to use your ears, eyes, and mind together to process music in a new way. Demystify sheet music and learn to read and listen well with good understandings of music cognition, music theory, and sight-singing skills. For any music-lover, from the college-bound music or musical theater major, to the professional musician, to the amateur musician alike.

8 classes. This class takes place on Wednesdays before the weekly rehearsals for HCA's Adult chorus, the Treblemakers. This class will take place in-person, but can be available to a student who wishes to access the class from home via Zoom.

Watercolors, Pastels, Oil, Acrylics - Oh My! There's a wide variety of paint in the world of visual arts. This class is a for true beginners or those artists who have only ever worked in one medium. The 8 class session will spend two classes each on a different type of paint. You will get a chance to learn the basics of each and find the medium that most inspires you. From there you will be ready to take a dedicated class to the medium of your choice. Materials will be provided.
