Hopkinton Center for the Arts Educational Classes

HCA is a regional arts center located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, that offers year-round classes and workshops for adults and children. Classes are taught by experienced artist-instructors and are tailored for beginning through advanced students in the visual and performing arts. Classes include programs in the fine arts, acting and theater, music, singing, movie-making, creative writing, and ceramics. If you are in need of financial aid, please fill out our online scholarship form. Young adults are welcome to enroll in most adult courses. 

If you wish to join a class already in session, please call us at 508-435-9222 and we'll pro-rate the cost proportional to the number of classes remaining in the session.

Join award winning nature photographer Steve McGrath on a Wildlife Photography Workshop where you will learn how to use your digital camera like a pro and improve your wildlife photographic technique, understand the settings of your camera and what you need to compose a professional looking photograph.


You'll have the opportunity to practice what you've learned out at the Southwick’s Zoo with Steve on hand to give you tips.  With so many great photographic opportunities and challenges at the Southwick’s Zoo, you'll have plenty of pictures and new skills to take home! In the first class there will be a short presentation were we will discuss tips and techniques for getting great zoo photographs that look like they were taken in the wild! Then off to the Zoo to photograph for the day. (Make sure you bring you the longest lens you have). There will also be opportunities to photograph at feeding times and special zoo keeper sessions where we will be able to photograph close up!

In the second class we will view our images and critique them for a show and tell.

Admission to Southwick Zoo is not included in the cost of the workshop.

For 4th - 12th graders players of any wind, string, or percussion instruments

Course Description

A fun and collaborative week of jazz playing that will take your child’s musical skills to the next level! All levels of experience are accepted, from beginner to advanced. Students will be matched with other players based on their skill level. Whether your child is just starting their jazz exploration, or they are an accomplished performer and passionate about continuing their studies, this week long program will fire up their passion to play music! A final performance will be given at the end of the week. Students should bring lunch, snack and a water bottle with them each day.

 

Jazz Ensemble Workshop will include:

Jazz Improvisation: Students will learn the building blocks to improvising Jazz Theory/Composition: A review on reading and writing music

Instrument Specific Masterclasses: Group lessons among similar instruments

Jazz Combo ensembles (to play on last day)

History/Jam Session: Explaining the history the music with interactive playing

This 8-class vinyasa flow session is open to all levels of experience with the understanding that students work within their comfort level. Classes move at a fluid pace but offer plenty of space for modifications as well as advancements. Expect to leave each class feeling relaxed and refreshed. 7 pm - 8 pm on7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1, 8/8, 8/15, 8/22 & 8/29

$80 - 8 class registration (Our best price - $10 per class) / Walk-ins are welcome if there's sufficient room @ $13 a class. 

Yoga mats and blocks are available if a student does not have their own. Please bring a towel and water. 

"Hi! I'm Ashleigh Olson. I grew up here in Hopkinton, graduating HHS in 2006. Yoga has always been a passion of mine, and I have been practicing for 10+ years now. I love it so much that I want to share it with as many people as I can, which is why I decided to become a teacher! I graduated Yoga Teacher Training (YTT 200 hour) in May of 2018 from Hot Power Yoga Center in Worcester, MA. I'm always learning and evolving as a teacher, I believe we never stop learning something that we love. One thing I hear constantly after becoming a teacher is "How I wish I could do yoga!" or "I'm just not flexible for yoga!" and I'm here to prove that yoga is for everyone! I teach to all levels, including beginners. I give clear cues and modifications to fit those who are injured and even those who are pregnant. 

I am laid back and calm in my teaching. I will guide you through the flow, and together we will create a little heat in the body. At the end of our practice, I will bring you to savasana which will help you to focus back on your breath. I infuse gentle breathing exercises and mediation to calm our minds and bodies, and hands on assistance if needed to bring you deeper into the pose. Yoga is both mind and body, a work out for both!  I am my true authentic self when I teach. I love to get to know my students and for my students to get to know me. You will be learning from a real person, not a robot and I want my classes to reflect that. We will laugh, and have fun in the process. It makes for a comfortable atmosphere knowing we are all coming to our mats as ourselves.  I look forward to meeting you in my class soon!"

Macro Photography Workshop at Tower Hill Botanical Gardens

Take your Macro Photography from good to great by capturing Flowers at Tower Hill Botanical Gardens. During this workshop you will learn to sharpen your awareness of light on the landscape. If you are an Intermediate to Advanced photographer, looking to fine tune your skills and expand your knowledge of photography, then this course is for you.

This course is ideal for the Photographer with some knowledge of manual camera settings that want to take their abilities to the next level. Join Steve McGrath as he reveals his tips and techniques for taking quality close up as well as Landscape Photography in the Gardens. This course is informative for both Digital and SLS (film) photographer. Bring a camera with macro capabilities and a large memory card. We will discuss how to use wide-angle, normal and telephoto lenses most effectively in the garden to strengthen your composition for maximum impact. You will also learn to use creative white balance and ISO for expanding you images. We will also view our images after an extensive day in the gardens.

The first class will take place at the Botanical Gardens and the 2nd class will be at Hopkinton Center for the Arts where we will share and critique the images taken. 

Please note that participants will need to pay a fee to enter the Botanical Gardens.
