Hopkinton Center for the Arts Educational Classes

HCA is a regional arts center located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, that offers year-round classes and workshops for adults and children. Classes are taught by experienced artist-instructors and are tailored for beginning through advanced students in the visual and performing arts. Classes include programs in the fine arts, acting and theater, music, singing, movie-making, creative writing, and ceramics. If you are in need of financial aid, please fill out our online scholarship form. Young adults are welcome to enroll in most adult courses. 


If you wish to join a class already in session, please call us at 508-435-9222 and we'll pro-rate the cost proportional to the number of classes remaining in the session.

Upper Ballet School - Intermediate & Advanced

Placement in this advanced program by Artistic Dance Director Jessica Wilson is required. Please send an email to jessica@hopartscenter.org if interested in Intermediate and/or Advanced classes.

Intermediate marks the start of pointe* classes for dancers as well as increased study of pirouettes, adagio, and allegro. Training for advanced students continues its focus on alignment and proper technique while preparing students for pre-professional and professional training options through. Both Intermediate and Advanced students are introduced to the world of classical ballet repertory as well as contemporary movement and improvisation through a weekly contemporary class. Intermediate and advanced students are also exposed to historical dance, character dance, modern, jazz, Pilates, and Alexander Technique by weekly classes, workshops, or master classes. (*Students will be placed en pointe when the faculty deems the student ready. Health and safety are a priority with a goal to help students dance injury free for a life time. Students must be training a minimum of three days each week to be placed en pointe.)

This is a 36 week commitment for the 2019-2020 academic year. The tuition cost will be determined based on the number of classes determined in consultation with the Artistic Dance Director. Flexible payment plans are available.

A group experience of Yoga which will include learning the physical practice of poses (asana), how to train and use your breathing to curb anxiety, stress, and fatigue and discussion around the meanings and practices of mindfulness, focus, kindness, and self-compassion. No previous experience required. Appropriate for everyone from age 13-18yo.

The classes will be taught by Ritu Kapur, Owner of Sohum Yoga and Meditation studio in Westborough. Ritu has been teaching yoga and mindfulness to children of all ages for over 10 years. She has taught yoga at many local schools.

Voice & Movement for Performers & Public Speakers

The first step in effective communication is becoming aware of and releasing habitual tensions in the voice and body. Designed for actors, performers and public speakers, this class will introduce the tools for developing a free and open speaking voice. Starting with breath, alignment and movement exercises, we will move into language using Shakespeare’s verse. Whether you are interested in learning how to create a more embodied character onstage or feel more at ease speaking in front of an audience, this course will explore relaxation, presence and inspiration from the inside out. Please bring a notebook or journal and come prepared to move with loose comfortable clothing. Karin Trachtenberg has over 30 years of experience in the theater as an actor, director, teacher, producer and arts administrator. She holds a masters degree in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University and attended drama school in London. Karin has taught theater and arts education at Clark University, Lesley University’s Creative Arts in Education Program, Pine Manor College and The Schauspiel Gemainschaft in Zurich Switzerland. She has performed at various theater venues throughout the Boston area including Zeitgeist Stage, Roxbury Rep, Newton Nomadic, Newton Theater Company, 4th Wall Stage, Stageloft Rep, Fort Point Theater Channel, Marblehead Little Theatre and Open Theatre Project. She is currently enrolled in the Master Teacher certification program with legendary voice and Shakespeare coach Patsy Rodenburg.

The HCA Art Enrichment series will give you a taste of a different art medium each week over the 6 class series. All materials will be provided.
