Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) offers a wide array of virtual and in-person classes and workshops in the visual arts, music, dance, theater, and ceramics. Programs are provided year-round for students of all ages, from pre-K to adult. Our talented artist-instructors provide a welcoming environment for students at all levels, from beginners to advanced. We will work with you to discover the best class for your needs. At the HCA we believe the arts are for everybody. If you are in need of financial assistance, please fill out our online scholarship form.

Refund policy: If you notify the HCA via email to info@hopartscenter.org two weeks prior to the start of a class, you will be offered a full refund or credit to use towards a future class. Cancellations that occur with less than two weeks notice are not refundable.

Placement in this class is required for all new students.  Unless specifically noted, classes will take place at the HCA South Street dance studio location at 22 South Street, 2nd floor, Suite 205.  

Intermediate marks the start of pointe* classes for dancers as well as increased study of pirouettes, adagio, and allegro. Training for advanced students continues its focus on alignment and proper technique while preparing students for pre-professional and professional training options through. Both Intermediate and Advanced students are introduced to the world of classical ballet repertory as well as contemporary movement and improvisation through a weekly contemporary class. Intermediate and advanced students are also exposed to historical dance, character dance, modern, jazz, Pilates, and Alexander Technique by weekly classes, workshops, or master classes. (*Students will be placed en pointe when the faculty deems the student ready. Health and safety are a priority with a goal to help students dance injury free for a lifetime. Students must be training a minimum of three days each week to be placed en pointe.)

Musical Theater Studio (Teens)

This is a 16-class session.

Designed for beginner and intermediate teen (high school) Musical Theater performers, this practical studio class will explore Musical Theater performance in an ensemble atmosphere. While we will use theater games, acting exercises, and scene work (scripted and unscripted) to develop essential skills, the emphasis will be on performing material from stage musicals.

Students should be comfortable singing and performing in public, and will gain insight and experience in developing a character and delivering a compelling performance in a range of styles. We will explore solo performances and duets. The class will work toward a showcase for the final class; however, the emphasis for this class is the learning and rehearsal process itself. This class is for the serious student. There will be work required outside of class. Registered students will audition during the first class for placement purposes. Please prepare a fully memorized song from a Musical Theater production, and bring your sheet music to the first class.

In this class, HCA Director of Music Eric Miller will help you learn how to use your ears, eyes, and mind together to process music in a new way. Demystify sheet music and learn to read and listen well with good understandings of music cognition, music theory, and sight-singing skills. For any music-lover, from the college-bound music or musical theater major, to the professional musician, to the amateur musician alike.

8 classes. This class takes place on Wednesdays before the weekly rehearsals for HCA's Adult chorus, the Treblemakers. This class will take place in-person, but can be available to a student who wishes to access the class from home via Zoom.

Basic Ceramics II (Gr 9th-12th)

Beginning and intermediate students will learn basic ceramic techniques. Students initial focus will be on basic wheel-throwing skills such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Later in the session students will be introduced to hand-building techniques and can then choose to work on individual wheel-thrown or hand-built projects. Intermediate students will focus on making more complex forms, glazing techniques and other surface decoration.

Group Guitar for Teens/Adults

Do you think the guitar may be right for you but you're not ready for 1:1 lessons? Then this class is for you! Music is a great stress reliever and a lot of fun! 

Beginner Group Guitar is an eight week course designed to introduce basic guitar playing to beginners, with no previous music study needed. Emphasis is placed on learning guitar skills through playing classic pop songs. Essential guitar skills and basic note-reading are taught in a fun, supportive setting that allows students to develop at their own pace. 

Instructor: Jack Byrne. Class dates: 9/24, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/12, 11/19, 12/10. (There are no classes on "First Fridays" of the month while Jack Byrne is hosting HCA's Open Mic Night, and no class the Friday after Thanksgiving) This class will take place in-person, but can be available to a student who wishes to access the class from home via Zoom. 

Jack Byrne is a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Boston, MA. Jack holds a Bachelor’s in Music from UMass Amherst, and a Master’s in Voice Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College. Jack is well versed in playing a wide variety of styles from Rock, Folk, Bluegrass, Metal, Classical, and Jazz. He has performed as a guitarist on tour with Indie/Pop band, “The Narrative,” and has been performing and recording his own music for about 15 years.

Jack teaches lessons in Voice, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Banjo, Ukulele, and Mandolin. His teaching philosophy is that you are the artist, and he is simply nudging you along to find your own voice. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a more seasoned player, it is Jack’s mission to help each of his students find the confidence to achieve their artistic goals through fun and upbeat lessons. He is the host of HCA's monthly Open Mic Night.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing (Gr 9th-12th)

This class is for high school students with or without prior experience in ceramics. Students with at least two years of wheel-throwing experience, and teacher permission, will be allowed to register for this class prior to reaching grade 9. Beginning high school students will learn basic ceramic techniques such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Experienced students will learn more advanced forms as well as hone in on their own individual styles. Form alteration and complex surface decorating techniques will be explored together with the instructor.

Open Studio for Visual Artists w/Marion Buricatu

Under the guidance of instructor Marion Buricatu, this 3-pack of Saturday workshops are for students wishing to find and enhance their fundamental art skills in drawing and painting. Students may bring a project of their choosing at any stage of the process, and Marion will customize her instruction and offer lessons on elements of art and technique.

Students should bring their own supplies. Spots are limited to 5 people to allow for individual attention.

The class will take place on September 25, October 23rd and November 20, 2021. A minimum of two (2) students is required to run this program. Saturdays 2 pm - 4 pm.

Whether you play an instrument, are a singer or like to work behind the scenes as an engineer, this class will teach you how to use your smartphone, computer, and other easily available tools to make music for yourself and with others.

This 4-class session is designed for actors, performers and public speakers, this course will introduce exercises and techniques for preparing the voice, body and mind for rehearsal and performance. We will explore listening and responding as part of an ensemble, how to approach character development through physical expression, and then move into language using Shakespeare’s verse.

Please bring a notebook or journal and come prepared to move with loose comfortable clothing.

Watercolors, Pastels, Oil, Acrylics - Oh My! There's a wide variety of paint in the world of visual arts. This class is a for true beginners or those artists who have only ever worked in one medium. The 8 class session will spend two classes each on a different type of paint. You will get a chance to learn the basics of each and find the medium that most inspires you. From there you will be ready to take a dedicated class to the medium of your choice. Materials will be provided.

Stage Combat w/Matt Greene

This compact course examines and applies the fundamental approach to the art of stage combat, stressing principles of safety, form, choreographic conception and execution. The class includes the exploration of a variety of combat disciplines (unarmed combat, knife, single sword) and the application of each in a choreographed fight. Emphasis is on an eventual application in a performance environment. This is a physically demanding course and participants should come ready to move.
