Teen Programs and Classes

Learning for all ages is fun at the The Hopkinton Center for the Arts!

Whether you are a beginner or advanced student, there are classes in Visual Art, Music, Art, Dance, Theater or Ceramics for you!

 

 

The HCA offers year-round classes and workshops for teens in the visual and performing arts.. Classes are specially tailored for different interests and are taught by experienced instructors. Choose from after school programs, evening classes, or weekend options. The HCA is an easy commute from the towns of Hopkinton, Holliston, Milford, Ashland, Upton, Franklin, Framingham, Southborough, Natick, and other MetroWest communities.

She earned her B.A. in Piano, Voice, and Anthropology from UMass Amherst, M.M. in Vocal Performance in Musical Theatre from NYU, and an Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from NYU. Drawing from the human figure is an enjoyable and powerful exploration into the cultural context of one’s own world. At the HCA, you will have the unique experience of blending visual arts with theater arts as we will incorporate models in theatrical costumes for timed posed sketches. This course uses simple materials—charcoal and erasers, inks and brushes—as means of discovery. Knitting for Adults/Teens

Instructor Sarah Moorehead will lead students through a series of knitting projects Owl puffs (this introduces casting on, the basic knit stitch, binding off, and knitting both straight and in the round) , Hat (we'll learn how to purl and make decreases in knitting, and will learn how to use double-pointed needles as the crown of the hat gets too small for circular needles), Mittens/Fingerless mitts (working with worsted weight yarn, casting on with double-pointed needles, increasing stitches and creating a "thumb gusset" and for a final project students can learn to make socks OR choose their own project and a new skill to learn-- cables, color work, lace, beads, etc! Drawing, Pastels & Painting (Session 1)

Students will draw both from observation and non-objective subjects. Then we will begin using drawing mediums and move toward painting. Mediums we will be using are pencils, graphite, marker, oil and chalk pastels, and charcoal. When painting, the student artists use watercolor, tempera, and acrylic. Students paint on watercolor paper or board, as well as explore tempera and acrylic on canvas or canvas boards. Students should bring an 11x14” sketch book to class and be prepared to draw daily. Most artwork will be created in their books. The goal of this class is to appreciate and observe the world around us every day, as well as better our love of art and our skill level. This class builds upon previous skills learned in Drawing/Painting/Pastels classes, or through other arts instruction. Supplies are included in the tuition. 10 classes per session. Taught by world-renowned photographer, Ron Rosenstock, this one-day workshop is designed for anyone wishing to learn more about creating meaningful art and preparing their art for presentation. In the morning session Ron will demonstrate mat cutting and framing. Everyone will have a hands-on opportunity to cut mats. Ron will supply everything needed for this workshop. After a lunch break, Ron will draw on his 50 years of experience in sharing his philosophy and also having everyone do an exercise he created based on the 13th century German theologian and philosopher Meister Eckhart, “Art is not just for special people but everyone is a special kind of an artist.”

Students will draw both from observation and non-objective subjects. Then we will begin using drawing mediums and move toward painting. Mediums we will be using are pencils, graphite, marker, oil and chalk pastels, and charcoal. When painting, the student artists use watercolor, tempera, and acrylic. Students paint on watercolor paper or board, as well as explore tempera and acrylic on canvas or canvas boards. Students should bring an 11x14” sketch book to class and be prepared to draw daily.
