About the event

Monsters, Memes, and Mementos explores what kinds of pictures are still effective for cultural exchange. With imagery constantly being relegated to the past and the following picture always loading, Fontinha is very interested in the aesthetics of the sudden. Within his work is both a nowness and a pastness, with imagery that is often instantly recognizable but stands outside of a traditional temporal structure due to a painterly use of physical immediacy and visual restraint. Fontinha’s paintings are composed of marks that convey an anxiety that mimics the frantic nature of our contemporary visual climate. He offers the viewer a fragmentation of coherence and the opportunity to detangle images through durational viewing in what is a brief truce between art and life.

Monsters, Memes, and Mementos comprise heroes, vintage movie stills, viral visual markers, and fetishized iconography conveying truths Fontinha feels can only be communicated through oil paint.

Meet the Artist reception is Saturday, June 15 | 1 to 2 p.m. | Open and free to the public
